James Church
Founder & CEO
The visionary behind it all. James turned his grandmother's recipe into a Chicago institution over three decades of dedication and love for Southern cooking.
From a single South Side kitchen to Chicago's most beloved fried chicken destination — here's the story of family, flavor, and heart.
Church's Chicken on the South Side of Chicago began with a simple promise: serve honest food made with love. Our founder, James Church, grew up watching his grandmother fry chicken in a cast-iron skillet with a recipe passed down through generations — a blend of bold Southern spices, a crispy hand-battered crust, and the kind of care that can only come from family.
In the early 1990s, James opened a small carry-out window at 79th Street and never looked back. Word spread quickly through the neighborhood. Lines formed. Families returned. The secret wasn't just the recipe — it was the warmth behind the counter and the belief that every customer deserved a hot, satisfying meal they could feel good about.
Today, we continue that tradition every single day. Every piece of chicken is hand-battered fresh, every order is prepared to order, and every guest who walks through our doors is treated like family. That's not a marketing slogan — it's how we were raised.
Every decision we make — from sourcing ingredients to training our team — flows from these core values.
Every dish is prepared fresh to order. We never cut corners because we genuinely care about what you eat and how it makes you feel.
We source fresh, high-quality chicken and produce from trusted suppliers. No frozen shortcuts — just real ingredients handled with respect.
We're proud to be a South Side institution. We hire local, support neighborhood programs, and give back to the community that built us.
Great food shouldn't break the bank. We keep our prices fair so every family can enjoy a satisfying, flavorful meal without compromise.
Three decades of growth, flavor, and community — here are the milestones that shaped who we are.
